Movie Review: Lars and the Real Girl

I saw this as part of a class assignment about interpersonal communication and relationships. Frankly, all I heard about it was that it was the movie about the guy who liked a doll. Needless to say, there’s more to the story.

A socially inept man uses a doll as a proxy to develop his communication skills.

In terms of how I viewed it, this was one movie that was hard to hear. The poor acoustics in the room and restless people didn’t help. All of the volume controls were at full blast and it was still too quiet. As such, it was what we had to work with.

Aside from that, the film was decent. It’s an interesting premise and probably one that could be done in real life. Lars’ works through his problems and does come to a resolution in that he is able to communicate better with others. How exactly that resolution is reached is sad.

This film is more for a group of small people rather than a class of about twenty-five. Turn up the volume or put the subtitles on and get some tissues on standby.
